With its impressively large fruit and size, there’s no wonder why the jackfruit tree is one of the most commonly found trees in tropical and subtropical regions. The jackfruit tree produces the largest fruit out of any fruit tree in the world. Bearing fruit weighing up to 80lbs (36kg) and growing up to 80 ft (20m) tall the Jackfruit is a stunning addition to any tropical garden. Jackfruit is also a powerhouse of nutrients and vitamins, rich in vitamin A, potassium and vitamin C. And to boot, has a pleasantly sweet and juicy flavor, great raw or in savory dishes. It has been gaining popularity in the vegetarian and vegan communities because of this protein-like texture of the fruit. That’s why, if you have the space, I always recommend Jackfruit as an addition to your garden. Plant it as soon as you can because they can live up to 100 years. The Jackfruit tree is harmless to animals but the sap from the tree can cause irritations in some people with latex sensitivities.

LIGHT
To ensure your Jackfruit reaches towering heights and bears beautiful fruit, I suggest you plant your Jackfruit in full sunlight. Preferably, Jackfruit should receive between 6-8 hours of direct sunlight each day. If growing indoors, ensure your Jackfruit gets ample sunlight throughout the day. Should sunlight be limited in your house, I have seen great success with a grow light.
WATER
Jackfruit enjoys moist soil, therefore moderate watering is required to maintain health and growth, allowing the soil to dry before each water. Once jackfruit trees are established I have found they are relatively drought tolerant and can survive for longer periods without watering.
SOIL

As Jackfruit seedlings require moderate watering, ensure the soil is well-draining. The soil where I planned to plant my Jackfruit tree was dense and filled with soil. I found with a sprinkling of gypsum, the young tree grew happily and healthily. In the case that your soil is sandy, adding some organic matter such as compost should aid in growth and health.
I like to add a good mulching around the base of my trees to ensure weeds are suppressed and moisture is retained. I also like the added benefit of additional nutrients from the mulch as it breaks down.
As you might be able to tell I’m a big fan of the Jackfruit tree and its beautiful fruit. With ample light, water, and space you’ll be able to enjoy the wonder of this magnificent tree.
